Special Voluntary Safari

DURATION: 9 DAY

DAY 1: ARRIVAL
Arrival in Arusha from Kilimanjaro Airport, Nairobi or alternative. Transfer to hotel, welcome reception, and then time to rest.

PART I: PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE SAFARI
DAY 2: INTRODUCTION AND TRAVEL TO SAMBASHA VILLAGE
Meet with Migada Management, discuss project mission and prepare for what we will see during People-to-People safari. Depart for Monduli, Afternoon plant, walk/ hike in adjacent forest with stunning views from mountain.

DAY 3: VISIT TO MAASAI VILLAGE IN OLDONYOSAMBU.
Meet with villagers and have a conversation about indigenous culture and economic changes occurring in Maasailand.  Picnic lunch will be taken in the neighboring forest reserve.

DAY 4: VISIT TO LOCAL MARKET AND REFORESTATION PROJECTS
Experience a traditional Maasai local market.  Proceed onto visiting tree-planting networks in the transitional villages of Longido.  Learn about re-forestation program and talk with women’s network members.  Experience traditional dancing and a cappella singing.   Lunch will prepared by villagers (vegetarian option available).

DAY 5: IT & EDUCATION PROJECTS, TRADITIONAL HEALTH CLINICS, HIV/AIDS
Visit Siwandeti Computer Center, a 32-desktop Internet-connected computer lab established in rural village in 2003.  Meet with local computer teachers and discuss challenges and opportunities of introducing IT into communities in Tanzania.  Proceed onto Natema Primary School and Kimnyaki Schools to see classroom construction projects and meet students involved in child school sponsorship program.  Afternoon, visit traditional medicine clinics in Arusha and discuss preservation of indigenous knowledge with traditional healers.  You have an option to visit NGO working on HIV/AIDS pandemic.  Can also visit International Criminal Tribunal for Rwandan Genocide.  Dinner with Migada staff with speaker on community-wildlife conflicts and issues to frame wildlife safari.
Part II: Wildlife Safari


DAY6-8 : GIBB’S FARM,NGORONGORO CRATER, LAKE MANYARA
Game drives in the world famous wildlife parks in Tanzania’s Northern circuit – Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Lake Manyara National Park.  Visit Gibb’s Farm lodge to learn about its coffee farm project and African medicinal spa focused on Maasai healing methods.

Part II:  Swahili Coast
DAY 9 - 12: ZANZIBAR
Travel to Zanzibar.  Walking tour around Stonetown including historic slave market and palaces of Omani sultans.  Discuss with professor at State University of Zanzibar on evolution of Islamic culture on the Swahili Coast of Africa.  Day trip on a marine safari to experience traditional sea travel on dhows, snorkeling opportunities, and beach BBQ including exotic fruits.  Visit schools including Pre-Primary Madrasas to learn about teacher training, environment, and health education programs.  Final opportunities for shopping for East African handicrafts and closing discussion with Terrawatu staff.
